Munich

Flew out of Boston on August 25 on Lufthansa. Was able to change to a bulkhead seat, making the flight more bearable. After arriving at the Munich airport on the 26th, the VBT shuttle brought me into Munich at the Hotel Laimer Hof. After settling in, I walked over to Schloss Nymphenburg, which was only a couple blocks from the hotel. I had lunch at a restaurant on the grounds, then explored the chateau and grounds, being the Bavarian counterpart to Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace and France's Versailles. I made it back to the hotel to rest a little, then met up with other VBT tour mates who had come from Oregon, but whose plane had been delayed at Washington for several hours. We had dinner at the Hirschgarten, the largest beer garden (according to the hotel staff) in Germany. After dinner I went to Romansplatz to take a tram into the city with my three day pass. Alas, tram routes change at night, so the line I was on got shunted onto another line in center city, so I eventually had to get off and walked back along the tracks to where I could pick up a tram back to Romansplatz. But I did get an unexpected walking tour of the city as a result. It was a long day, and I slept well.

Day two started out with a guided tour of the city, followed by the obligatory touristy lunch at Hofbrau Haus. (Service was glacially slow.) When done, I toured the Schatzkammer at the Residenz, but time was running short and I wasn’t able to tour the rest of the Residenz. Went back to the hotel to change, came back into the city, had dinner at a weinstube the tour guide had that morning suggested, then attended a Mozart concert of string quintets, again at the Residenz. Another long day, and another good sleep.

The final day I wandered about center city for a while, then went to the Bayrisches Nationalmuseum on the edge of the Englischer Garten. It was getting late, I was a little tired, so I passed up wandering the Englischer Garten and went back to the hotel. Had dinner that night in the Laimer district at a wonderful Bavarian restaurant the hotel had recommended, then walked to the S-Bahn stop for a final ride to the Hauptbahnhof in Munich, and a tram ride back to the hotel.

Munich's trams, S-Bahn, and U-Bahn all were first rate.

The next morning the Munich group met Edgar and Gail, and all of us VBTers got on a bus to the airport for the flight to Luxembourg City.
